Anna (14) was referred to SAFE! following incidents of on-going bullying. She had been repeatedly targeted by another young person at school.
Anna was deeply upset by this and had suffered a loss of confidence. Anna was given seven sessions of support by her SAFE! Project Worker during which we completed work looking at raising Anna's self-confidence and her resilience levels.
One of the sessions delivered was in school involving Anna and her friends in collaboration with Jo Brown, Oxfordshire County Council's Anti-Bullying Coordinator, which looked at assertiveness. This was very well received. Anna and her parents feel that school is now taking the problem a lot more seriously.
Anna's mum said at the end of SAFE!'s input "my daughter was unsure at first but relaxed after the first session. The increase in her confidence is massive", while Anna fed back, saying "I liked everything about it".
We asked Anna a series of questions at the start and end of the 6 sessions of support to measure the effectiveness of the intervention. On a scale of 1 to 10, Anna's safety increased from 3 to 10, her anger/ upset about the bullying decreased from 9 to 1, her confidence increased from 6 to 8 and her happiness increased from 3 to 10. At the start of the project Anna felt the likelihood of something similar happening against was at 9, and this has decreased to 3 at the end of the support she received from SAFE!

Sarita (13) was sexually abused by a family member while at home. Despite an initial reluctance to being supported, Sarita was thoughtful and engaged very well in the sessions which focused on issues of safety, anger and conflict.
Sarita was very anxious about being harmed again and worried that the person who hurt her could make contact with her again when travelling to school. Sarita was very much aware that she gets angry often and quickly. Sessions included looking at what occasions triggered her anger and what she was thinking and feeling at the time. She reflected on how her thoughts and feelings influenced her behaviour. We looked at techniques to help her manage her anger, thought about what conflict is and considered 4 ways to respond to conflict positively.
After a few sessions Sarita's mum commented that she was a lot calmer and was starting to use music and other strategies to help her from getting angry. She had also talked to her younger brother about constructive ways to deal with anger. During the sessions, Sarita was given worksheets that she can use in the future. This was something that she asked for at the beginning of the sessions and she kept a file of all of her work and the exercises she found useful.
Sarita was given 5 sessions, of support, but she and her family know they can contact SAFE! again should they like more support. This may include support around the future court case and ensuring Sarita feels safe and confident in the run up of the court hearing where she may be called as a witness.
